Recognizing outstanding doctoral and master's degree students

Graduate students are central to the mission of Arizona State University as the New American University for research excellence, global outreach and local embeddedness.The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences values excellence in graduate education, and we're pleased to continue the Graduate Excellence Awards program. This program recognizes outstanding doctoral and master's degree students who have been honored nationally and internationally during academic year 2016-17 through receipt of monetary awards (e.g., fellowships, grants, travel awards, scholarships).

Graduate Excellence Awards

The college recognizes outstanding graduate students who have been nationally acknowledged through funded fellowships, scholarships, travel and meeting awards. Eligible students receive funds to advance their research and are recognized at an annual ceremony.

Eligible students

  • students (PhD or master's) in graduate programs administered by academic units in our college
  • students (PhD or master's) whose committee chair has a primary faculty affiliation in an academic unit in our college

Eligible monetary awards

  • fellowships and scholarships awarded directly to the student from national agencies, private foundations or international organizations (e.g., NSF, NIH, NEA, Fulbright, Ford Foundation, United Nations)
  • grants awarded to support a specific graduate student to a faculty advisor at ASU from national agencies or private foundations (e.g., NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant)
  • travel awards from non-ASU societies or organizations to attend conferences
  • awards from non-ASU societies and organizations (e.g., best poster award, best talk award)

Eligible period

  • Notification or receipt of award between April 1, 2016 until March 24, 2017 (i.e., Summer 2016 through Spring 2017)
  • Start of fellowship or grant between April 1, 2016 to March 24, 2017.
  • Continuing receipt of a multi-year fellowship or grant extending into the period of April 1, 2016 until March 24, 2017. 

Not eligible

  • grants awarded to faculty members that include general support for graduate students (e.g., NIH R01) but not awarded for a specified graduate student
  • honors received without a monetary award
  • monetary awards or grants received from ASU academic units, colleges, through the ASU Foundation or ASU-affiliated organizations
  • training grants awarded to academic units or graduate programs

Monetary awards will be distributed until allocated funds are no longer available

  • $200 for fellowships, scholarships and grants (NSF, NIH, NEA, Fulbright, Ford Foundation, United Nations, etc.)
  • $100 for all other awards (travel and conference awards, poster awards and best talk awards)
  • Eligible students may only receive one award per year from the college regardless of the number of awards submitted for eligibility, and the award amount will be based on the largest award received.

The application process 

  1. Complete the application form and include in your submission:
    1. An official email with notification of the award, scholarship or fellowship
    2. Or a scanned PDF of an award statement letter (if received as a paper copy)
  2. Information can be submitted at any time up until March 24, 2017. Awards will not be considered after that date.
  3. Funds will be distributed through ASU student accounts and will be viewable through my.asu.edu. We anticipate distributing the funds no later than April 30, 2017. Students are encouraged to apply early as awards will be distributed until allocated funds are no longer available.
  4. To avoid any potential issues in receiving your award, please ensure the following:
    • any holds on your account are resolved
    • your mailing address is current
    • your direct deposit information is current (if applicable)
