Community Mentors

Community Mentors deliver unparalleled student-led support to first-year residents. Community Mentors live in the CLAS Residential College residence halls providing Sun Devil leadership, academic role modeling, and assisting students in navigating their way through a successful freshmen year of college.

Position Description and Mission

The Community Mentor is a peer advisor and educator working within a residential college to assist residents and address needs in the hall and within the university community.  The position is challenging because the Community Mentor works with students and administrators, learning to articulate rights and responsibilities for both the individual and the University, and balances his or her own pressure of academic and personal responsibilities.  Community Mentors receive training around five core competencies under the supervision of a Residential College professional staff member.  The five core competencies of the Community Mentor position are:

The Role of the Community Mentor

Community Leader

  • Community Mentors are expected to build individual connections with each resident in their area of responsibility and provide one- on- one peer mentoring to each resident.
  • Community Mentors are expected to quickly establish a presence on their floor in order to develop positive rapport and familiarity with all floor residents.
  • Community Mentors facilitate floor meetings as identified by Residential College  staff or students.
  • Community Mentors are expected to be available & visible to other residents on the floor.
  • Community Mentors are expected to initiate and implement educational and social programs in compliance with a community programming model that addresses the interests and needs of all floor residents.
  • Community Mentors are expected to be visible promoters of Sun Devil Athletics events and actively engage with and encourage students to attend athletic events.


  • Community Mentors are expected to demonstrate knowledge of hall procedures.
  • Community Mentors have a vital role in reporting facilities concerns of residents and are expected to be available to address concerns as necessary.
  • Throughout the year, Community Mentors may be asked to implement surveys, assessments, or collect other data aimed at providing better service to students.
  • All Community Assistants are expected to be present for hall opening and closing each semester, as well as other college focused events, as determined by Residential College professional Staff.

Crisis Management

  • Community Mentors are expected to report all emergencies and assist Residential College Professional staff with managing emergency or crisis situations.
  • Community Mentors are expected to participate in an on-call duty rotation.
  • Community Mentors have a vital role in making residents aware of students' rights and responsibilities within a community.
  • Community Mentors document and address Residential Life and Student Code of Conduct infractions following appropriate response protocols.
  • Community Mentors assist residents in mediation of roommate or resident conflicts, or by making appropriate referrals to Residential College Professional staff.

Team Member & Role Model

  • In support of community development, Community Mentors are expected to participate in and actively support their respective Residential College Council.
  • As members of both the CLAS Student Engagement team and University Housing team, Community Mentors may be asked to support university wide events or initiatives with both their attendance and encourage their residents’ participation.
  • Community Mentors are expected to demonstrate the highest ethical behavior as defined by both the student code of conduct and by their Residential College Professional staff leadership.
  • Community Mentors actively encourage and recruit students to participate in CLAS Residential College events and other programs designed for CLAS students.

Academic Mentor

  • Community Mentors develop learning outcomes for community programming which provide knowledge and skills relevant for first year students living in the CLAS Residential College.
  • Community Mentors develop and maintain a calendar of events related to the academic calendar year and college engagement opportunities, including event reminders.
  • Community Mentors assist in the marketing of programs developed by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences academic units.
  • Community Mentors actively participate in college programs, maintaining an energetic and positive demeanor throughout events
  • Community Mentors serve as a resource to CLAS Residential College students including, but not limited to, the Learning Resource Center, Student Services, Sun Devil Fitness Center, Student Health Center, and utilize mentoring skills in facilitating these resources.
  • Community Mentors serve as an example of student success by demonstrating effective leadership and involvement in curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Community Mentors act as a liaison between students, Residential College Professional staff and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences regarding academic concerns, problematic behavior of other students, and communication of transition issues, e.g. financial concerns, adjustment issues.


  • Must have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • 2.75 minimum semester and cumulative GPA.
  • Full-time undergraduate student.
  • 24 ASU credit hours completed at beginning of service.
  • Good disciplinary standing.
  • Display enthusiasm toward working with first-year students and upper-class colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Have creativity and initiative to develop new ideas.
  • Willing to take chances and be responsible for results.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Dependability.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and availability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Role modeling skills.

Approximate Hours/Week

Hours will vary. Community Mentors are expected to use Residential College rooms as a primary residence and be generally accessible to students on their floors. Programming, duty, organizational meetings, and other tasks require approximately 20 hours per week. Please note that commitments outside of academics and the Community Mentor position are limited to 10 hours per week, and students accepting the position are required to abide by these parameters.

Room credit, Meal Plan, and Stipend

Community Mentors are compensated with a room credit, meal plan and a stipend every semester depending on experience in the position.
