LIA 101 Facilitators & Mentors

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking for outstanding majors in our college to be LIA 101 Facilitators and Mentors. These individuals will teach or assist teaching a LIA 101, a student success seminar, under the supervision of the assistant director of first-year programs. Facilitators and Mentors will serve as role models to their first-semester students as they adjust to life at Arizona State University, while gaining valuable public speaking, communication and leadership skills that look great on a resume or graduate school application! Facilitators will receive elective credit for LIA 394 and Mentors will receive credit for LIA 294.

 LIA 101 is a student success course for all College of Liberal Arts and Sciences freshmen. You will have a unique opportunity to help and guide our college's freshman by sharing your ASU experiences with them. This program also encourages you to develop relationships with staff, faculty, and your peers within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Eligibility 

  • 2.75 minimum grade point average
  • good standing with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities

Minimum qualifications for Facilitators

  • must have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • 48 credit hours completed at ASU and/or community college by end of spring 2018

Minimum qualifications for Mentors

  • must have a declared School of Life Sciences or Psychology major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • 24 credit hours completed at ASU and/or community college by end of spring 2018

Desired qualifications

  • Involvement in co-curricular and/or extra-curricular activities
  • Prior leadership/teaching/mentoring experience
  • Experience speaking or presenting to an audience

Responsibilities

  • Enroll in LIA 394 and earn three hours of upper-division elective credit as a facilitator or enroll in LIA 294 and earn two hours of lower-division elective credit as a mentor
  • Lead meaningful discussions
  • help 19 first-semester freshmen adjust to life at ASU
  • introduce students to facilities and resources available
  • serve as a role model for students in your assigned LIA 101 course

Additional responsibilities for Facilitators 

  • teach topics and skills related to academic success in LIA 101 once a week
  • grade assignments related to LIA 101 topics

Application process

Complete our online application including current resume, a few short answer questions and a faculty/staff reference.

  • Application deadline is Sunday, March 4, 2018
  • Interviews with selected candidates will be scheduled once all applications have been submitted and reviewed.
  • All applicants will be notified of final decisions no later than Friday, April 6, 2018

Training 

Mandatory training sessions will be held in April and August.
