Program Description
Degree Awarded: MA Social and Cultural Pedagogy
The MA in social and cultural pedagogy is a two-year program designed for educators with professional experience who seek to develop real-world skills and practical knowledge to help them accomplish specific career goals.
After they are equipped with philosophical, theoretical and practical knowledge on social pedagogy, students are able to analyze social structures and cultural dynamics and work with communities to address complex societal problems through the design, implementation and evaluation of socio-educational strategies.
Students have the opportunity to create an individualized path of study that accommodates their personal interests and career goals. Students can also join a vibrant university club (Social and Cultural Pedagogy Graduate Organization), a national organization of scholars and practitioners (Social Pedagogy Association) and an international organization (Global Alliance for Social Pedagogy and Social Education).

30 credit hours including the required applied project course (SST 593)

JUS 500 Research Methods (3)
SST 501 Foundations of Social Transformation (3)
SST 510 Social and Cultural Pedagogy: Theoretical and Practical Issues (3)
Electives (15 or 18 credit hours)
Culminating Experience (3 or 6 credit hours)
SST 593 Applied Project (3) or
SST 599 Thesis (6)
Additional Curriculum Information
Students who elect to complete the applied project option must take 18 credit hours of elective coursework to reach the required 30 credit hours for the program.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution recognized by ASU.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor' degree program, or applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

Additional Application Information
An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency. TOEFL scores are required for applicants whose native language is not English.
Applicants should supply a two- to three-page application letter (writing sample) in which they explain why they want to study in this program and why they feel well prepared to succeed in this graduate program.
The resume should describe prior educational history, related work or volunteer experiences.

This program allows students to obtain both a bachelor's and master's degree in as little as five years.

Learning Outcomes
- Graduates of the program will demonstrate the ability to interpret and conduct quantitative and qualitative research.
- At the completion of the program, students will demonstrate knowledge of social transformation and social change through an interdisciplinary lens and use an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach to address social and cultural pedagogy issues and solutions in their projects.
- Graduates will demonstrate an understanding of key theories and concepts in the field of social and cultural pedagogy in both their written and oral presentation work.

This master's degree enables graduates to contribute to a better future via traditional, nontraditional and nonformal educational settings; these include early childhood education programs, schools, youth programs, local governments, nongovernmental organizations, museums, nonprofits, intercultural programs, cooperatives, citizenship education, human rights programs, antipoverty programs, community development programs, literacy programs, community centers and social movements.
