Undergraduate Research Scholarships for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences students

Undergraduate research provides an essential component of a student’s educational experience. Participating in research as an undergraduate will sharpen your critical-thinking skills and give you valuable preparation for life after college. The Arizona State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has several scholarships available for students who are interested in participating in research experiences with faculty. For Fall 2008, approximately $20,000 in undergraduate research scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Undergraduate students with a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who are interested in participating in research experiences with ASU faculty are invited to apply for one of several undergraduate research scholarships.
The scholarships listed below are open to students in all majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (approximate amounts for 2008-09). There are also research scholarships available for students in specific majors.
Please review the criteria for each scholarship before completing the application to be sure that you meet the requirements.
Dean's Undergraduate Research Scholarships
To encourage and support undergraduate research across the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Dean, alumni and friends fund three scholarships. One scholarship will be awarded to a student in each of the three divisions in the college: Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. For Fall 2008, each of the three scholarships will be for $2,500.
Sheldon Davidson Family Research Scholarship
The Sheldon Davidson Family Research Scholarship is a tribute to Dr. Sheldon Davidson’s interest in lifelong learning and his distinguished career in medicine. To encourage and support undergraduate research that demonstrates an ability to think about contemporary issues and to resolve them with innovative solutions, the Sheldon Davidson Family Research Scholarship was established. For Fall 2008, one scholarship for $800 will be awarded. Note: specific criteria are required for this scholarship.
Sun Angel Excellence in the Humanities Research Scholarships
To encourage and support undergraduate research in the humanities, the Sun Angel Foundation sponsors annual awards for students majoring in English, film and media studies, history, languages and literatures, philosophy or religious studies. For Fall 2008, three scholarships at $2,000 will be awarded. (There will also be three scholarships at $2,000 available for Spring 2009. Applications will be due no earlier than September 15, 2008). Note: specific criteria are required for this scholarship.
Women and Philanthropy Access to Undergraduate Research in the Sciences Scholarships
To encourage and support undergraduate research by underrepresented students in the sciences , the Women and Philanthropy organization funds scholarships for students majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth and Space Exploration, Kinesiology, Life Sciences, Materials. Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Psychology and Speech and Hearing Science. For Fall 2008, up to four scholarships at a minimum of $2,000 each will be awarded. Note: specific criteria are required for this scholarship.

Selection Process
Students must complete and submit all application materials to Michele Daley, CLAS Office of Student and Academic Programs, Fulton Center, Suite 110, 300 E. University Dr., Tempe, AZ 85287-6405 by Friday, March 28, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.
The CLAS Undergraduate Research Scholarship Selection Committee will select the recipients. Scholarship applicants will be notified of the Committee’s decisions by June 1, 2008 and funds will be distributed for the fall semester.
