Concurrent Degree Checklist

General Rules:

  • Students pursuing a concurrent degree in CLAS must be in good academic standing (Note that economics requires a 2.50 ASU GPA).
  • CLAS requires that at least 30 credit hours used to fulfill the major requirements of a CLAS degree be exclusive to that degree and NOT used to satisfy major requirements for another degree(s) or minor(s). If you are substituting courses between majors you may need to take additional courses in the CLAS major(s) to fulfill the 30 exclusive credit hours.
  • If you enroll in a course that is cross-listed between your concurrent major departments, make sure that you register for the course under the prefix of the major department that you want to use the course for.
  • If both of your degrees are in CLAS, you must be following the same catalog year for each.
  • If one degree is in another college, you must also follow the rules and procedures of that college.
  • A Declaration of Graduation form is required for each of your degrees when you have completed 87 hours.
  • With the exception of Languages and Literatures, concurrent degrees may not be from the same department or discipline. Contact CLAS if you have any questions about appropriate combinations.

Definitions:

Your primary degree is the one that shows at the top of your transcripts. Your concurrent degree is the additional degree or degrees that you want to pursue.

Procedures:

  1. Inform your advisor for each degree that you are pursing concurrent degrees as soon as you decide to do so; this information is important to the department's record keeping and it may affect your recommended courses.
  2. Fill out the form available at these links: PDF | Word and turn in to the CLAS Office of Undergraduate Programs in Fulton Center suite 110. This may be done for CLAS degrees at any time after you decide to pursue the concurrent degrees.
  3. If one of your degrees is in another college, contact that college and complete its required procedures for requesting/pursuing concurrent degrees.
  4. During the semester that you will complete your 87th credit hour complete a Declaration of Graduation form (D.O.G.) for each degree. The form is available at http://www.asu.edu/registrar/forms/pos.html.
  5. Obtain the major advisor's signature on the D.O.G. and, before you leave the advisor's office, make sure that the concurrent degree box is checked on the D.O.G. for your concurrent (not primary) degree and that you have listed any minors that you are pursuing on both D.O.G. forms. Note that your minors will only appear on one of your D.A.R.S. reports.
  6. Follow the college's guidelines for obtaining the remaining approvals and for submitting the D.O.G. to the college. For CLAS simply submit the D.O.G. to the CLAS Office of Undergraduate Programs in Fulton Center suite 110.
  7. If your degrees are in different colleges, the D.O.G. for your primary degree must be processed before the D.O.G. for your concurrent degree(s). Also, if your primary degree is in another college the CLAS Graduation office cannot accept a CLAS D.O.G. for a concurrent degree until your primary college has informed the University Graduation office of their approval for you to pursue concurrent degrees.
  8. If you wish to add a minor after submitting your D.O.G. use the "Declaring a Minor" available form in FOUND 110 to obtain your major advisor's approval and to notify the CLAS Office of Undergraduate Programs.
  9. Notify the college(s) in writing if you decide not to pursue concurrent degrees.
