Projects/Events

The College Ambassadors organize a number of events throughout the year for the betterment of Alumni and Students alike.  The group also undertakes a number of projects to improve the college, such as bringing speakers to campus or drafting proposals on initiatives to further student association with the College.

A list of our current projects and events with summaries:

1. Peer Mentoring Projects - Jason Stokes, Paul Bergelin, Brianna Wright and Tanya Musgrave.

These projects aim to connect freshmen students to their departments and to their college by involving them directly with upper class volunteer mentors. Paul Bergelin heads the on-going peer mentor program for the History department while Jason Stokes heads up the newly-christened mentor program for the Anthropology Department. Briana Wright and Tanya Musgrave are currently developing a similiar program for the Political Science Department.

2. Student Manual - Whitney Meshay and Samantha Winter

The student manual, written by the Ambassadors themselves and illustrated by Shaun Capehart, will introduce incoming students to the rigours and trials of Arizona State University and life in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Informative, entertaining, and offering fresh perspectives, the student manual is looking at a release sometime in Spring 2007 or in time for Fall 2007.

3. Coor Cafe - Whitney Meshay and Paul Bergelin

Although still in the planning phase, the Coof Cafe would be a CLAS-oriented meeting center where students can have lunch, purchase coffee, and generally relax, currently aiming for construction in the Coor building. More updates on this project as they become available.

4. Dinner with the Deans - All College Ambassadors

The College Ambassadors host informal dinners with Dean Wheeler and the Associate Deans of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, normally monthly, where the Ambassadors present their projects to the Dean for approval.  These events also serve as forums for the Deans to field the concerns and questions of the student body through the College Ambassadors.

5. Alumni Events - Jessica Williams and Gaby Traxler

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences alumni are invited back to ASU, hosted by the College Ambassadors, for receptions, forums and even softball games where current students can interact with alumni in order to get advice on career plans, general life experiences and how to apply their degrees most effectively.  Other events include Alumni hosting events for the Ambassadors and their invited guests.  More information to come!

6. Student Identity Within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences - All College Ambassadors

The College Ambassadors student identity project means to reinforce the notion of what it means to be a Liberal Arts major. This project will remain multi-faceted, ranging from t-shirts to student-sponsored events to projects like the Coor Cafe and peer mentoring programs.

7. Trebuchet Project - Paul Bergelin
An innovative student project from the History Peer Mentor Program in partnership with the College Ambassadors of Liberal Arts and Sciences has constructed a replica of a 12th century Warwolf trebuchet which will have its first public demonstration Homecoming weekend. On October 27th from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Student Recreation Complex (SRC) East lawn, this ancient siege weapon once used to tear down castle walls will launch produce such as watermelons and pumpkins at a 6-by-10-foot cutout of the Cal Golden Bear.
