Probation Pre-Appointment Homework
You have received a letter indicating that you have been placed on Academic Probation due to low grades because the advisors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences want to help. We will assist you in developing strategies to increase your academic success so that you may remain at ASU to achieve your educational goals. It is our goal to empower students in academic jeopardy by helping them re-assess, re-trench, re-focus, and re-energize their educational career.
While on academic probation or continuing probation, all probation students will work with the academic advisor in the department of their major to learn how to take charge of your education and raise your GPA to good standing. As soon as possible you should make an appointment to speak to your academic advisor by calling and identifying yourself as a student on probation. If you are unsure who your advisor is, or how to contact him/her, refer to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Advisor Directory at http://clas.asu.edu/students/advising/deptadvisors.htm. The list is alphabetical by major and includes each advisor's name, phone number and office location. During peak advising times, you may be required to "walk-in" or make a same-day appointment.
BEFORE attending your advising appointment, regardless of whether it is same-day or one arranged ahead of time, you must complete the following steps:
a copy of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Advisor-Student Probation Contract. You must bring this contract with you to your appointment .
as you do so to indicate that you understand what you have read. If you have questions, make a note of them so you can discuss them with your assigned advisor. If you need more explanation regarding any of the following policies, you may delay initialling that section until you have met with your probation advisor for clarification.
You will complete it with a plan of action to be determined between you and your academic advisor. Since you may be required to change your registration based on the outcome of your appointment, it is very important that you meet with your advisor as soon as possible and keep that appointment. If you do not bring your Contract, you may not be seen even though you have a scheduled appointment. Instead you will have to make a new appointment at a future time.
If you do not have access to a computer or printer at home, there are computers available on campus at the Computer Commons Atrium and in Coor Hall 150. HOWEVER, please be sure to arrive on campus well ahead of time so that you have time to complete the homework before the time scheduled for your appointment.
Academic Probation
Students are placed on academic probation when their ASU cumulative GPA drops below good standing as defined by the chart below. Typically, this will be noticeable after your grades are posted at the end of a semester. Notifications are sent to advise students of their status and the requirement that they meet with an academic advisor.
Students on probation in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences must meet with the academic advisor in the department of their major and be cleared by that advisor to register, drop/add, or attend courses following being placed on academic probation. Although your transfer grades were considered when you were seeking admission to ASU and when deciding which transfer courses could be used to satisfy degree requirements, they are not computed into your ASU GPA. Only courses completed at ASU are used to compute your ASU semester or cumulative GPA.
To avoid disqualification from the university after you have been placed on academic probation, you must obtain increasingly higher GPAs each semester according to the number of credit hours you have completed based on the following chart:

The continuous increase in required semester GPA for students on academic probation reflects the difficulty in raising cumulative GPA as you accumulate a greater number of credits. You can compute your semester GPA by using the following website: http://universitycollege.asu.edu/advising/gpa.php.
You may remain at ASU on continuing probation as long as you
- meet your semester GPA goals,
- meet with your academic advisor and
- follow the plan set forth in the Student-Advisor Contract.
If you fail to meet these requirements, you will be disqualified from the university. If you are disqualified you must seek reinstatement and readmission before you will be allowed to return to classes at ASU during a regular fall or spring semester and you must meet with an Office of Student and Academic Programs academic advisor for clearance before you you will be allowed to register for any ASU summer session.
Strategies to Improve Your Academic Standing
When you meet with your academic advisor, he or she may suggest a variety of strategies to improve your GPA and academic standing. You may be asked to repeat certain courses, satisfy incomplete coursework, or take prescribed courses that will improve your performance, or take advantage of various campus resources, so it is important that you understand how these policies and procedures work at ASU. In addition, your advisor will consult with you as to whether your current major is the right one for you, so you should think about that important question before your appointment.
Repeating Courses
ASU lower division courses (100 and 200 level) in which a "D" or an "E" was earned may be repeated one time for credit to replace the previous grade. Before a course may be taken for the third time, students must petition the college standards committee. Submitting such a petition does not, however, guarantee permission for a second repeat. In general, such petitions are granted only if the specific course is required for the student's degree program. An example would be ENG 101 for any student or PSY 290 for a psychology major.
Lower division grades that are repeated will reflect both grades on the official transcript but only the higher grade will be computed into the cumulative GPA. Credit hours will be awarded only for the passing grade being used to compute the cumulative GPA. "Omnibus" courses with the same course prefix and number but different content (for example, ENG 294) or coursework that is designated in the course catalog as "may be repeated for credit" (for example, DAN 130) may not be repeated for a better grade.
Incomplete Coursework
University policy allows instructors to grant a grade of Incomplete ("I") only when a student who is doing acceptable (passing) coursework is unable to complete a course because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control. Incompletes must be resolved with the same instructor within one year of the last day of the semester in which the course was originally taken or the "I" will be automatically changed to a failure ("E"). The work to be completed will be determined by the original instructor of the course. When completing a course by retaking the same course a second time, students do not re-register or pay tuition a second time, but do attend class sessions and/or complete all work required by the instructor to earn a grade to replace the incomplete ("I").
Withdrawal Process
Students may withdraw from individual courses. Withdrawals result in a grade of "W" on your transcript for each course from which you withdraw. You may withdraw from courses by obtaining and processing a written course withdrawal form (withdrawal forms can be downloaded online from http://www.asu.edu/registrar/forms/regforms.html) at the Registrar's office in the Student Services Building, or on ASU Interactive. Students who wish to process a complete withdrawal from all their courses for the semester must meet with one of the Retention Specialists in the Registrar's Office (SSV 140).
Individual course withdrawals can be processed either in person or online through the tenth week of classes. There is no limit to number of individual courses from which a student may withdraw during this period. The individual course withdrawal deadlines for 2007-2008 are shown below. As long as you process you withdrawal prior to these deadline, a grade of "W" will be reflected on your transcript and there will be no impact on your semester or cumulative GPA.

There are many resources available for students at ASU that can help you take control of your academic and personal life as you work toward bettering your performance. Your academic advisor can help you think about what kinds of assistance could be beneficial for you, but you may want to look over some of the resources available on our Student Resources website. In particular, think over your current choice of major and whether it is still working for you by reviewing the resources for choosing a major on ASU's Career Services website.
If you have not done so, you may now make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor by calling and identifying yourself as a probation student. Remember to bring your initialed contract with you to your appointment!
