Choosing a Law School

Career Placement Factors

When choosing law schools, consider your future job search. Law schools publish, or will provide on request, statistics on the rates at which they place graduates in jobs after graduation.

For each of the schools to which you apply, find out their placement rate and consider these data as you weigh your choices. Consider the locations and salaries of jobs secured by graduates, as well as any differences in placement between the top 10% of the class and the other 90%.

Also find out whether each school offers career counseling and what support services (e.g., computers, copy machines, online services) are available to assist you with your job search.

In addition, determine what type of clinical, internship, and externship opportunities are available, including the number, location, and salaries (if any) of these opportunities.

Consult the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) and other offices and websites for further information about career planning and placement.
