CLAS Hall Peer Mentors

Peer Mentors are upper-class CLAS students who provide leadership to first year CLAS students who are living in the residential college. Peer Mentors further the success of incoming students though planning and providing academic and social programs designed to facilitate first year students’ transition into ASU. They live in CLAS Hall and help create a full supportive collegiate experience. As part of a team, Peer Mentors are instrumental in developing an environment of student achievement and excellence that reflects both individual and community goals. Be a part of this vision!

The information below is for 2009-10. The selection process, duties and responsibilities may change for 2010-11.

Students interested in becoming a Peer Mentor need to complete and submit the LAS Peer Mentor Application form and the Consent to the Release of Information form. Deliver the completed applications to Hassayampa Building A, room A110 before March 2nd for the 2009-2010 academic year. You will be contacted for an interview during the month of March.

Duties and Responsibilities—Programming

• Develop both academic and social programming for students living in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College. Examples include organizing and facilitating study groups, scheduling presentations by advisors or faculty, creating themed social events, and organizing philanthropic events.
• Participate in programs. Maintain an energetic and positive demeanor throughout events.
• Develop and maintain a calendar of events. Generate event reminders.
• Market peer mentor events and other events, including programs developed by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences academic units.
• Actively encourage and recruit students to participate in Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College events and other programs designed for CLAS students.
• Assess completed programs in a timely manner. Gauge student interest and needs to create engaging programs that will benefit the community. Work with Community Assistants develop, promote, and execute programming in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College.

 

Duties and Responsibilities—Mentoring

• Serve as a resource to students living within the Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College for academic, social, and personal issues. This involves active promotion of student resources including, but not limited to, the Learning Resource Center, Student Services, Student Recreation Center, Student Health Center, etc. Utilize mentoring skills in facilitating these resources and understand boundaries and limitations of the Peer Mentor position.
• Serve as an example of student success by demonstrating effective leadership and involvement in curricular and co-curricular programs. Model positive student behavior through good decision making.
• Operate as a liaison between students, the CAs, and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College Program Coordinator. Examples of this duty include, aid in securing space for Residential College programming, communication with CAs about problematic behavior of individual students, communication of common student complaints.
• Help establish and build community and maintain enthusiasm by being a friendly and accessible person that students living in the community can recognize as a mentor, leader, and friend.

 

Duties and Responsibilities—Training and Evaluation

• Attend weekly meeting with Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College Program Coordinator. All peer mentors will enroll in an internship course (LIA 484, one credit hour per semester) that provides a curricular mission for mentorship training.
• Maintain weekly reports for the Liberal Arts and Sciences Residential College Program Coordinator.
• Write a personal and program assessment at the end of each academic semester.
• Attend training sessions/workshops as needed.
• Attend Residential Life meetings as needed (hall council, floor meetings).
• Tackle special projects as assigned.

• Flexibility in scheduling and availability to work some nights or weekends.
• Role modeling skills.
• Good disciplinary standing.
• 3.0 minimum semester and cumulative GPA.
• 24 ASU credit hours completed at beginning of service.

 

Length of Employment: Fall 2009 – Spring 2010


Approximate Hours/Week:
Hours will vary. Peer Mentors are expected to use Residential College rooms as a primary residence and to be generously accessible to students on their floors. Programming duties require approximately 10 - 15 hrs/week.


Compensation:
Room credit at Hassayampa, Wing H

Peer Mentors are responsible for their own mandatory Meal Plans.
