Undergraduate Research Scholarships

Undergraduate research provides an essential component of a student’s educational experience. Participating in research as an undergraduate will sharpen your critical-thinking skills and give you valuable preparation for life after college.

The Arizona State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has several scholarships available for students who are interested in participating in research experiences with faculty.

Applications for Spring 2010 research scholarships are due November 12, 2009. Prior to completing your application, please review the general criteria as well as the criteria for each specific scholarship listed below.

 Arizona Power Authority Scholarships

To encourage studies in the power and energy fields, the Arizona Power Authority funds annual awards for students. For 2010, up to four scholarships of $3,000 will be awarded.

Specific criteria:

• Students must be a U.S. citizen.
• Preference for students who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence and economic need.
• Preference for students engaged in undergraduate research with faculty.
• Preference for students who are science majors wishing to study and become part of the power and energy field.
• Half of the funds will be distributed at the beginning of the spring semester, with the remaining funds distributed at the beginning of the fall semester, contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory progress report.

 Sun Angel Excellence in the Humanities Research Scholarships

To encourage and support undergraduate research in the humanities, the Sun Angel Foundation sponsors annual awards for students majoring in English, film and media studies, history, languages and literatures, philosophy or religious studies. There will be up to three scholarships of approximately $2,000 available for spring 2010.

Specific criteria:

• A declared major in English, film and media studies, history, languages and literatures, philosophy or religious studies.
• At least 60 credit hours completed, with 15 hours completed at ASU.
• Students must enroll in a 499 course in the major and work with an advisor to produce a scholarly paper (or equivalent) in the humanities. The 499 independent study course may not be concurrent with the honors thesis or with a pro-seminar, but it may be a springboard to either one.
• Half of the funds will be distributed at the beginning of the semester, with the remaining funds distributed upon receipt of a satisfactory progress report from the student and the supervising faculty member.

Women and Philanthropy Access to Undergraduate Research in the Sciences Scholarships

To encourage and support undergraduate research by underrepresented students in the sciences , the Women and Philanthropy organization funds scholarships for students majoring in chemistry and biochemistry, earth and space exploration, kinesiology, life sciences, mathematics and statistics, physics, psychology and speech and hearing science. There will be up to four scholarships of a minimum of $2,000 each available for spring 2010.

Specific criteria:

• A declared major in chemistry and biochemistry, earth and space exploration, kinesiology, life sciences, materials, mathematics and statistics, physics, psychology or speech and hearing science.
• Preference for female and under-represented students.
• If the award is made for the academic year, half the funds will be distributed at the start of the fall semester. The remaining funds will be distributed at the start of the spring semester upon receipt of a satisfactory progress report from the student and the faculty member.

General Criteria for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Research Scholarships

• Undergraduate student (includes current Arizona State University students, incoming freshmen and transfer students pursuing their first four-year college degree).
• Have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, ASU at the Tempe campus.
• Full-time enrollment (12 semester hours; if you are awarded a scholarship and do not maintain full-time enrollment, your scholarship may be cancelled).
• Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (high school, community college or ASU).
• Students must have a proposed research project.
• Students must obtain the written support of a faculty member in the ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who will supervise the research experience.
• Students are encouraged to present their research results in a public forum.
• Financial need is not required

Selection Process

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Scholarship Selection Committee will select the recipients no later than December 15, 2009.
