Disqualification/Probation

Academic probation

Students whose GPA places them below good standing as defined by Arizona State University or their particular college will be placed on academic probation. See the ASU General Catalog for more information.

If you are placed on probation, you must meet with an academic advisor in the department of your major. Only by doing so will you be allowed to register for the next semester so you can continue your studies at ASU. This mandatory advising requirement continues until you have earned a cumulative GPA that restores you to good academic standing.

You may make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor by calling your department and identifying yourself as a probationary student.

Before your probation appointment, you must complete the Pre-appointment Probation Homework. Bring your initialled Advisor-Student Probation Contract and a current DARS report with you for your meeting with your academic advisor. If you arrive without the contract and your DARS report, your appointment may have to be rescheduled. Always take a copy of a current DARS report (with all sections opened) and a new contract with you to your advising appointment.

There is no limit to the number of semesters you may continue at ASU while on academic probation as long as you experience no break in attendance and maintain a satisfactory semester GPA. The minimum semester GPA required for you to continue at ASU while on probation is as follows:

Completed Credit HoursMin. Semester GPA
24 or fewer1.60
25 - 551.75
56 - 862.00
87 - 1002.10
101 - 1152.20
116 or more2.30

The continuous increase in required semester GPA for students on academic probation reflects the difficulty in raising cumulative GPA as you accumulate a greater number of credits.

If you leave ASU on probation, you should meet with an advisor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Office of Student and Academic Programs, Fulton Center 110, regarding procedures and requirements for readmission to the university. Call 480-965-6506 for an appointment.

Disqualification

Students who fail to meet the minimum semester GPA after being placed on academic probation will be disqualified from further attendance at Arizona State University.

If you are disqualified, you should immediately contact the Office of Student and Academic Programs in the Fulton Center , Suite 110, 480-965-6506. You will be required to meet with a college advisor to learn your options to earn reinstatement. These usually include earning specific grades in prescribed courses at a community college or at ASU during the summer session.

Disqualification is for a minimum period of one year, although if you do not succeed in meeting the minimum terms of reinstatement, the disqualification may last indefinitely. Students who far exceed the minimum requirements for reinstatement are given one chance to shorten the term of disqualification to a single semester. However, if you are reinstated to ASU and then disqualified for a second time, you may not be reinstated for a period of less than one year in the future.

When you meet with a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences advisor, you will be given the college's terms for earning reinstatement as well as a list of acceptable courses in which you may enroll in order to meet those terms.

After you have met with an advisor in Fulton Center 110, go immediately to the ASU Readmissions Office in the Student Services Building to apply for readmission for the appropriate semester. The college establishes a deadline for paperwork submission each semester, and students who do not complete all paperwork prior to that date will be denied readmission for the given semester. You should be certain to obtain the relevant deadline dates from the advisor.
