Altheide brings expertise to 'Fearless' summit in Rome

David Altheide, Regents’ Professor in the School of Justice and Social Inquiry, and Nan Ellin, director of the Urban and Metropolitan Studies Program in the School of Public Affairs, are featured speakers at the World Social Summit in Rome, Sept. 24-26.

They will join other global experts including Nobel Prize laureates, academics, politicians and others to exchange ideas on the theme, “Fearless: Discussion on How to Combat Global Anguish.” The summit will focus on significant questions about how urban living promotes fear and anxiety, what is the role of the mass media in creating fear, alternatives and correctives to the institutional frameworks that generate such anxiety and what the future holds for these global trends.

Altheide, an authority on the mass media and fear, will discuss the role of the media in “Creating, Framing, and Amplifying Fear,” while Ellin, who has focused on urban designs that promote or detract from fear, will present her work on “Integral Urbanism.”

The World Social Summit is an annual international event that brings experts from around the world together to discuss issues that have an affect on global social evolution.
